Genealogy Help and Hints

The basic place to start with genealogy is in your own backyard!  The Internet is a great tool, but it is no substitute for working with material you have at your disposal.   1) Talk with relatives.  Get information from parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and anyone else related.  2) If you can GO to the county where your relatives are from.  NOTHING substitutes primary resources  3) State archives  4) Research libraries

Ancestry.com     Some people hate it because you pay for the service...you pay because of the information available.  If you don't want to invest in a monthly / quarterly / annual subscription, try your local library and see if they have a subscription you may use at their facility.  (Yes we do and a computer dedicated for genealogy).

Familysearch.com

It is a website maintained  by the LDS church.  Under search Records go to advances search.  You may run names through: Ancestral File / 1880 Census / International Genealogical Index (IGI) / Pedigree Resource File / US Social Security Death Index / Vital Records Index / Family History Websites.

Familysearch Pilot

This site provides access to millions of original source documents from many areas of the world, and more records are being added all the time.

Example Ohio Death Records online.  Look at index of items available for North America.

Rootsweb

The primary purpose and function of RootsWeb.com is to connect people so that they can help each other and share genealogical research. Most resources on RootsWeb.com are designed to facilitate such connections.  Researcher beware.  Information is only as good as the person posting it.

Find-A-Grave

Find the graves of ancestors, create virtual memorials, add 'virtual flowers' and a note to a loved one's grave, etc.  Not every tombstone / Graveyard is on this site, but it is worth a shot.

Death Indexes

This website is a directory of links to websites with online death indexes, listed by state and county. Included are death records, death certificate indexes, death notices & registers, obituaries, probate indexes, and cemetery & burial records. You can also find information here about searching the Social Security Death Index online.
