Lewis Webster born Aug 2, 1837 married Catharine DuLanty on Feb 24, 1861. Catharine is an orphan from Ireland who was taken in by the Benjamin Jeffries family in Cleveland, Ohio and brought to Ottumwa in 1856 . Her birth date may be Jan 10, 1842.

Lewis enlisted in the 36th Infantry Company H at Keokuk. He served from Mar 8, 1864 and was discharged at Duvall's Bluff, Ark on Aug 24, 1865. He was paid $360 plus $41 in clothing. He was commended for appearing at each roll call and had had no disciple charges.

After the war he was constable for the south side of Ottumwa. He may also have been sheriff for Wapello county.

He was president of the Grand Army of the Republic Tuttle Lodge and headed the encampment in 1921.

He died on Jan 9, 1922 and Catharine continued to live at 108 Ransom. She died on Jul 15, 1933. They are buried in Evergreen section of Shaul cemetery. With Jay Funeral Home in charge and at the Davis Street church..

Obituary

Mrs. Susan A. Davis passed quietly away at the home of her son, Cal Davis, Thursday, Cal Davis, Thursday, October 29,1925 at the ripe age of 79 years, 7 months and 10 days. She had been making her home here for some time past.

Susan A. Patrick was born near Greenburg, Decatur Co., Indiana. March 18,1865, she was married to Edward Davis and to this union was born seven sons and two daughters. Robert G. Davis, of Iron Mountain, Michigan, Mrs. Florence McGrew of Shenandoah, Iowa, Geo. G. of Arion, John C. and Frank B. of Ute, Iowa, Alva E. and Chas. H. Davis near Castana and James G. Davis of Highland Falls, N.Y.

One of the two daughters mentioned, Mrs. Mary Jane Nichols departed this life in departed this life in 1889.

Edward Davis, husband of the deceased, also passed away the same year. Mrs. Susan A. Davis is survived by only one brother, W.W. Patrick of Kennebec, South Dakota, but had twenty-four grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Mrs. Davis had joined the M.E. church at the age of 15, and was later united with the later united with the Baptist church in 1862. In this church she remained a member until the disbandment. She was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to the very end when through the door of death she passed into the Paradise of God.

The funeral servies were held at the Church of Christ, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock.. Rev. Peter Jenesn officiating. The body was laid in its final resting place in the St. Clair cemetery at Ute.

Please note that in the 1900 Census George T. states his Father was from New Jersey and his mother was from Kentucky. It states that below George T. (William's Father) was the son of a Robert Davis. I can not find a Robert Davis in the Decatur Census until 1850 and then he was eight (8) years of age.

WILLIAM DAVIS

Not many years ago in Clay township, this county, a farmer began his married life with less than one thousand dollars and within seven years he owned fire hundred and thirteen acres of land, all of which he made and paid for himself. This enterprising farmer is William Davis, a well known citizen of Clay township, whose home farm of two hundred and eleven acres lies eight miles southwest of Greensburg.

William Davis, the son of George T. and Mary (Case) Davis, was born in Sand Creek township, Decatur county, in 1848, and lived on the old home farm until twenty-one years of age. George T. Davis was a native of Franklin county, born in 1818, who died on January 17, 1909, at the age of ninety-one years. He came to Decatur county when a young man, after his marriage, and settled on a farm in Sand Creek township, where he spent the rest of his life. He was a successful farmer and accumulated considerable land, being the owner of one hundred and eighty acres at the time of his death. George T. Davis was the son of Robert Davis, who came to Decatur county in pioneer times and entered three eighty-acre tracts, which, later in life, he gave to his children. At the time this land was given to George T. Davis by his father he set out some locust trees that are still standing. A member of the Whig party until 1856, George T. Davis became a Republican upon the formation of the latter party. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Westport and of the Baptist church at Letts. He and his wife were the parents of eleven children, of whom seven are still living, namely: William, the subject of this sketch; Isane, of Iowa; Thomas C., of Tennessee; Martha, of Vernon, Indiana; John, of Letts Corner, this county; Lavina, who married John Jerris of Marion township, this county, and Mrs. Hannah Brown, of Connersville, Indiana.

In 1870 William Davis was married to Harriet Hunter, the daughter of Lewis and Mirah (Martin) Hunter, both natives of Dearborn county, this state, the former of whom was born in 1806 and died in 1859, and the latter of whom was born in 1814 and died in 1848. Lewis Hunter moved from Dearborn county to Jennings county in an early day and spent the rest of his life in that county. After the marriage of Mr. Davis, in 1870, he and his wife worked on a farm, and he worked by the month. After a few years of hard and diligent labor he rented a farm and finally purchased two hundred and ninety-nine acres, paying seven or eight thousand dollars for the property. He paid this debt off in seven years and then purchased two hundred and thirteen acres more, having come to own, within seven years, five hundred and thirteen acres. At that early period he received no financial assistance and was not benefited by any legacies. He has made his money from the live-stock business, buying, feeding and selling cattle and hogs. For years he was a large dealer in live stock and some weeks shipped between five and ten thousand head of hogs, mostly to Louisville.

To William and Harriet (Hunter) Davis two children have been born, James G., who farms the home place, married Mrs. Dora Stout, widow of Albert Stout, and daughter of Herman Myer, and has three children, George W., Mary and Denzel D., and Nora, who married Ralph McGee, of Greensburg, a farmer, and has one child, a daughter, Orpha. Mr. and Mrs. Davis are members of the Baptist church and are regarded as among the leaders in the good works of their community.

Mr. Davis is a Republican and is a strong believer in the Republican principles. He was beaten by only one vote for trustee in Sand Creek township, at a time when the normal majority of the opposition was one hundred. Fraternally, he is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Greensburg. First and last a stockman, Mr. Davis feeds about fifty head of cattle every year and has two silos. The land is gently rolling and originally grew sugar trees and walnut, as well as yellow poplar. Broad-minded in his views and charitable in his attitude towards others, Mr. Davis is always ready to help the unfortunate and is a good, strong, substantial citizen.

Joseph Davis, age 55 years, a life long resident of the Westport neighborhood, died at his home six miles east of that city last evening at 8:30, o'clock after a lingering illness with tuberculosis. He is survived by a widow, four daughters and three sons. The funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Baptist church at Westport, conducted by Rev. Robison and .the remains will be interred in the cemetery at that place. Mr. Davis was widely known and-liked by his acquaintances and his death is a matter of universal regret. The I. O. O. F. Lodge of Westport will have charge of the service.

Mrs. Rosa Jane Davis, 86; a widely known woman of Sand-creek township, passed away at 11:50 p. m. Wednesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Maddux, in Westport.

For the past 15 years she had resided at the homes of various children and for the past year had resided with Mrs. Maddux. She had been confined to bed for-the past six weeks.

A native of Decatur county, She Was the daughter of Oliver and Eliza Argadine Elliott and was born on Jan. 12, 1865. Practically her entire life was spent in Decatur county and for many years she resided on a farm near Letts.

Her marriage to Joseph Elbert Davis occurred on Feb. 2, 1887. He passed away in July, 1912.

Mrs. Davis was a member and an active Worker in the congregation of the Mt. Aerie Baptist church at Letts for many years. She transferred her membership to the Westport Baptist church upon locating there. She was a member and a past noble-grand of the Westport Rebekah lodge.

The survivors are: Four daughters, Mrs. H. O. (Gloie), Craig, of Greensburg, .Mrs. Nellie Boyd, of Indianapolis, Mrs. Mary Marsh, of Denvert Colo., and .Mrs. Pearl Maddux of Westport; three sons, Harry Davis, of Westport, Raymond Dayis, of . Medina, Adrain Davis, of Madison, Wis.; 22 grandchildren and six; great grandchildren. A brother died in infancy and a sister, Mrs. Clare McGee, preceded her in death. A grandson, Morris Davis, and a great-granddaughter, Linda Sue Cherry, also are deceased.

Also surviving are a-half-brother, William Elliott, of .Forest Hill; and three half-sisters, Mrs. Anna Voiles, of Letts, Mrs. Hannah Vantreese, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Mary-Mantooth, of Burney. Funeral rites will be held at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the West-port Baptist church. The Rev. John Cassady, pastor of the church, will officiate/Burial will toe made in the Mt. Aerie church cemetery at Letts.

Minnie Belle Sisson Coombs

Obituary - 1892

Died - - At her home in Adams township, Wapello county, Iowa, on

Saturday, July 9th, 1892, after a brief illness, Mrs. Minnie Belle

Combs, aged 32 years, 7 months and 4 days. She was born in Jefferson

county, this state, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Sisson. She removed

with her parents to Ottumwa when three months old, where she grew up to

womanhood and where she married in December, 1882, W. B. Coombs, with

whom she lived happily until her death. Such was her religious training

and associations that she early gave her heart to the Savior, united

with the Congregational church and had always lived a pure and

consistent christian life. She was of that joyous and happy

disposition, but unusually pure in thought, word and life from her

youth. She was generous almost to a fault, ever ready to contribute to

the happiness of others, to aid in all good works, to comfort the

distressed, to minister to the wants of the sick and afflicted, the poor

and the needy, and was ever rea! dy to work for the betterment of

society. Mrs. Coombs had been liberally educated, and taught school

before her marriage. In march, 1890, she moved with husband and family

to their beautiful "home on the hill," where she happily lived and where

she peacefully and calmly passed away. During the three years she had

lived in the Amador neighborhood she had endeared herself to all who had

formed her acquaintance, and she is deeply mourned by the whole

community. The number of persons in attendance at the funeral service

was probably greater than ever before assembled in Adams towship on a

similar accasion. A beloved and dutiful daughter, an affectionate wife,

a fond mother, a kind-hearted neighbor, and a useful member in church

and society, has passed away. But it is sweet and consoling to know

that sister Minnie is not dead to God. That she has only gone on

before, to the realms of bliss - only exchanged worlds - where the

suffering body is "changed and fashioned like u! nto the glorious body

of the Son of God." May the God of all consolat ion bind up the wouded

hearts of the bereaved family.

Many were the tears that fell to earth as the long procession of sad

faces passed by the beautiful casket in which lay the remains of Minnie

B. Coombs with her still born infant lying upon her arm in the same

casket.

O, Minnie! dear Minnie,

Not lost but gone before.

We will clasp thee again in a long embrace

When we meet on the golden shore.

In failing helat for the past year, he died Tuesday at Chicago, Ill, here he had been hospitalized for four days.

The son of Joseph and Jennie Elliott Davis, he was born in Decaut County in 1908.

He was united in marriage to Luciell Ketchum in 1928.

He namanged a service stateion in Westport for a number of years before moving to Columbus. He later moved to Madison where he resided until he moved to Tucson, Arizonia because of his wife's health.

Survivors include, other than the widow, Mrs. Lucille Davis; a daughter Mrs. Dianna Sasman, Des Plaines, Ill; a brother, Raymond Davis, Florida and three sisters Nellie Boyd, Indianapolis, Mary Marsh, Florida and Pearl Maddux, Muncie.

A sister, Mrs. Gloie Craid and a brother, Harry E. Davis preceded him in death.

Roy Leslie Speakman enlisted in the US Army on September 21, 1917 at Sturgis, SD. He served at the Verdun front and St. Michel in France. He was honorably discharged in Camp Dodge, Iowa on March 3, 1919. The family has two letters he wrote while in the service.

I was very young when Dad told me this:

One day my Dad and I were outside; it was morning and the birds were chirping and making an awful racket. I said, "shut up, birds!". And then my Dad told me this story.

I was on supply detail, several others and me. We took supplies from camp to the front lines. It was very dangerous as the enemy did not want the soldiers to get their ammunition or food.

One day we had completed our delivery and were on our way back when it became dark. We found a cave and took shelter there. When I woke up by throat hurt as though it was on fire. It was hard to breathe and I was blind.

I called to my companions but no one could answer. I stumbled across their bodies and knew they were dead. I knew then that we had been the victims of mustard gas. Since I had been sleeping close to the entrance of the cave I had some fresh air and so had survived. But I didn't know how long I had been unconscious.

I finally found the exit to the cave and stumbled on the railroad tracks. I knew the tracks went east and west. To the east lay the enemy, to the west was camp and safety. But I was totally blind. I didn't know which way to go.

I felt the sun shining on my face, but was it morning sun or evening sun? Everything was very quiet. Suddenly the air was filled with the sound of birds, squawking and fighting and calling for food.

Ah, I thought, it must be morning, those birds sound so hungry so I turned and let the sunshine on my back and walked back to camp.

Roy spent some time in the hospital and was then sent back to the US, regained his eyesight; but the mustard gas permanently affected his lungs.

"William D. Millisack, 90, of 201 Vanness, a retired theater owner and operator, died Sunday at 1:15 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital. In the days of the silent movies he was a partner of E.J. Fry in the RexTheater. The son of Jacob and Martha Millisack, he was born 6 Feb 1874, at Drakesville, and spent all of his life in the Ottumwa area.

His marriage to Willa Lee Dennis took place in 1895. She died in 1950. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Marian Leggett of Ottumwa. A brother-in-law, S.E. Dennis, lives in Wichita, KS.

The service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Jay Funeral AHome. Tev A.D. Steffenson, pastor of First Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery. Dated 3/15/1964(?).
