The following information came from Dave Hanna of Georgetown, Texas.

 

James Nickels (the name is sometimes spelled as Nichols) married Elizabeth Reid in

Ireland. He came to America in 1773 and was granted 100 acres on Mudlick Creek in 96 District (Laurens County), South Carolina.  In 1776 he purchased an additional 100 acres from John O’Neal. James had brothers, William, Chartus and Nathaniel Nickels.

 

James Nickels joined General Cunningham’s Loyalist foreces in 1775 and was with the British in Savannah in 1779. By 1783 he was in Rawdon, Hants County, Nova Scotia where he filed a claim for his Loyalist services on 18 July 1786. In 1793 he was arranging to buy 225 acres of land on Canes Creek in South Carolina and the family moved back to Laurens County.

 

James and Elizabeth (Reid) Nickels had the following children:

            5.*Mary Nickels born 21 March 1790 in Nova Scotia married James Bryson

            6.Elizabeth Nickels

 

In 1814 James Nickels migrated to Franklin County, Indiana and settled in an area that would later be in Union County. He helped found the Presbyterian Church in Dunlapsville (Union County) Indiana. He was the first ruling Elder. He died in 1826 in

Union County and is buried in the Presbyterian Church cemetery in Dunlapsville.

 

The children of James and Elizabeth (Reid) Nickels:

1.James Nickels, Jr. was born 5 February 1779 in South Carolina. He came

to Union County and was popularly called “Bachelor Jimmie.” In 1813 he built his log cabin below the swamp on the farm now owned by William Booth. He lived there two years alone, putting in his spare time building another cabin on the farm now occupied by George Hubbell. In 1815 he returned to South

Carolina. He came back bringing his father, mother, brother and two sisters, one the wife of James Bryson. The Nickels and the Bryson’s settled the farms now owned by the Booth’s, the Hubbell’s and the Crawford’s. James Nickles, Jr. died

22 July 1849 in Union County, Indiana and is buried in the Dunlapsville Presbyterian cemetery.

 

2.Thomas Nickels was probably born in South Carolina. He married Margaret Hutchinson

4. Elizabeth Nickels married William Nickels 9 November 1820 in Franklin County, Indiana. He was born about 1792 in South Carolina and Elizabeth was born about1788 in Nova Scotia.  In 1850 they were living in Liberty township Union County near the Bryson’s and the West’s and were farming.

Their family living at home in 1850 was Thomas born about about 1822 Mary born about 1824; James C. born about 1825 and William H. born about 1827.

5.*Mary Nickels married James Bryson about 1812 in South Carolina. James Bryson was born 31 December 1785 in now Laurens County, South Carolina. James Bryson and Mary (Nickels) Bryson had the following children:

            John Bryson born 11 August 1816

            Thomas Reed Bryson born 1818

            Henry Hunter Bryson born 1819

            Jane Bryson born 1821

James C Nickels, farmer, P.O. Dunlapsville, was born in Liberty Township, 8 May 1825. His grandfather was William Nickels of the District of Laurens, N.C. who immigrated with his family to this county in1806 and settled where Dunlapsville is now where he entered 320 acres of land. They suffered the same privations of the pioneers of that early day, living in wagons under a beech tree for three months while they cleared 40 acres and planted it in corn. Here they lived until 1827, when they moved to Vermillion County, IN.Here the father and mother both died. Mr. Nickels was a strong anti-slavery man, although Democrat.

 

One of his six children was William, the father of the subject of this sketch. He married Miss Elizabeth Nickels. He served in the war of 1812, against the Indians. In this, he helped to build the block house at Connersville and did many other services. His children were; Thomas, Mary, James C., William H. He was a Presbyterian. His wife died in 1859 and he died in 1869. James C. Nickels received a common school education and today owns 218 acres of land. He married Margaret J. Abernathy who was born in this township 12 June 1836. They married 12 April 1855. There children is

Mary E. Nickels and William W. Nickels.
