SOME OF THE FOLKS BURIED AT EAST OR DROOK CEMETERY

Today in 2006 you are a busy family. Both members of the household are holding jobs in different places maybe as far as 50 miles from Liberty.

Your children are in school and have many after-school activities  where you must chauffeur them to and from.  Homes are being built each a little larger than their neighbors and there are mortgages to meet each month. Everyone has to have an automobile or maybe two or three even though gasoline is over $2.50 per gallon.

However, someday and we do not know how long you are going to die. Now we have a nice cemetery at the west end of Liberty but those plots are almost all filled. There is also a mausoleum on the grounds and today because of cost more people are being cremated.

Where will your remains be left and is there endowment funds for the upkeep of your final resting spot?

When Liberty became the county seat people had begun to populate the area. Up until that time most burials had been on the land owned by the family. However, in about 1830 the first burial was made in a place known as East cemetery. It later was also known as Drook cemetery. This burial site remained in use until West Point was formed. I have found one burial in 1910 but most were from the 1830’s until the 1880’s a span of about 50 years.

Do you know where East cemetery is located? I have lived in the area 76 years and have never seen the cemetery however I know where it is found....in between two trees on the east end of Liberty on U. S. 27. If you travel that highway you have to pass the entrance but would never guess Liberty pioneers were laid to rest there.

There have been only two readings of the cemetery. Many of  the grave sites were not found in the last reading and probably today only a few markers are still standing. James Nutty and his wife visited the graves of his family in the late 1990’s and Jim was so appalled at the condition that he repaired  the Nutty markers himself.

Probably there are a few kinfolk still in this area. Most buried their dead and then left the county probably never to return.

Using the alphabet listings from both readings we have researched the names. Some of the

names were not found but the following information came from county records, census and ancestry.
