Overdue Material

When you apply for a library card, you are asked for an E-Mail address.  With a valid e-mail address our Evergreen Indiana software will automatically e-mail you notices.  The first will be three days PRIOR to material being due.  The second is the day it is due and the third occurs after the material is due.

If you do not return your material in a timely manner; the information is gathered by "Unique Management" who will begin sending you notices about your overdue material at intervals of 14 / 28 / 45 days.

If after 45 days you still do not return your material, then we ask Unique Management to start Collection Procedures.  At  that time your material will be considered "lost" and a processing fee of $10 will be added to each item.  A Unique Management collection fee of $10 will be added to your total bill.

Union County Public Library / Evergreen Indiana fines are simple:  there is a 1 day grace period.  After this 1 day, fines are accrued from the due date at a rate of  $.25/day.  If material is lost, the cost of material and a processing fee is added (as per Evergreen Indiana Procedures).  Fines and or fees over $10 will result in the loss of library privileges for the entire Evergreen Indiana system.  Fines accumulated at ANY library will count against your $10.

Parents or Guardians are responsible for the fines and lost material of a minor child.  Parents or Guardians may be subject to loss of borrowing privileges due to fines on a minor child or children's card(s).

What is Unique Management

As of August 2004 The Union County Public Library board has agreed to use Unique Management collection agency to help encourage patrons with overdue materials to return them to the library.

The board agreed to pass the cost of this service on to each patron whose account will be handled by Unique Management.

This has been decided with fairness to all library patrons and taxpayers in mind.  Materials not returned are not available for others to use or borrow.  Also, if materials are not returned, in most cases, money from the library budget is used to replace them.  This same money, could much better be used to purchase new items for patron use instead of replacing non-returned items.

The Library hopes this practice will encourage all library borrowers to return items by the date due.  Most library items by be renewed by bringing the item with the patron's library card for presentation at the circulation desk.  Also, book and video returns are available when the library is closed.

Patrons will still be notified that their materials are overdue and have ample time to respond prior to being turned over for collection.  Unique Management Services, has been selected as the collection agency for the library.  Unique Management works with libraries throughout the United States and specializes  in the recover of overdue materials and has an excellent record of treating patrons professionally.

The Union County Public Library is serious about recovering overdue materials.  Patrons who do not return materials are stealing from the library and the community at large.

Fortunately, only a very small percent of patrons using the library do not return materials as agreed.  This new policy will not effect the vast majority of patrons who return materials on time.

Best advice....enjoy the library....take advantage of the free material, but remember to return items on time and pay your fines!
