Dunlapsville (Indiana) Presbyterian Church

The first Presbyterian preaching in Indiana of which we have authentic record was at Rising Sun in 1804. The church of bath was organized in 1808. In 1810 “a petition from Presbyterians residing in Dearborn County, Indiana Territory for supplies” let to the appointment of Rev. Samuel Baldridge, who was sent to Lawrenceburg; he preached at Brookville and up the White Water as far as Dunlapsville. A little later, Rev. David Monford “preached regularly at a school house near Mt. Carmel and at Dunlapsville.”

This region was then under the care of the Presbytery of Miami, organized in 1810. The territory was afterwards transferred to the Presbytery of Cincinnati, organized in 1822. White Water Presbytery was not in existence until 1842.

There was Presbyterians here of whom we have reliable information in 1813, but the minutes of Whitewater Presbytery give the date of organization of Dunlapsville Presbyterian Church as 1823, probably the time when it was received by Cincinnati Presbytery.

The pioneers of that faith who were among the early settlers of the valley of the East Fork of the Whitewater River were of Scotch-Irish stock and came here from South Carolina. of these were

the Templetons, Hannas, Livingstons(Leviston) Swanns, McGriers, Logans, McCanns, Abernathys,

Bryson and Nickels.

One of the charter member of this church was James Nickels, Jr. popularly called “Bachelor

Jimmie,” who in 1813 built his log cabin, below the swamp on the farm now owned by William Booth. He lived there two years alone, putting in his spare time building another cabin on the farm occupied now by George Hubbell.

In 1815 he returned to South Carolina, and came back bringing with him his father, mother,

brother and two sisters, one the wife of James Bryson. Other relatives and friends came at the same time. The Nickels and the Brysons settled the farms owned now by William Booth, Robert Hubbell and William Crawford.

The plot of the town of Dunlapsville was recorded in Franklin County in 1817, Union County not being formed until 1818. The first church building was constructed of large logs which were cut in part by John Templeton and William Nickels, and Mr. John W. Templeton assisted in the hauling. The building stood east of the present edifice near the brow of the hill. The records of Union County

note this transfer. Lots 8, 9, and 10 on which the meeting house and graveyard stood at time of transfer, September 23, 1826 were deeded to the “Salem Presbyterian congregation of Dunlapsville, Robert Swann, John Templeton and Alexander McCann, Trustees; by William Nickels.

We notice from an inscription on a tombstone in the cemetery that Thomas Reed was buried there in June 1819. Might we not safely infer that the church was organized as early as 1818 or 1820. The earliest records were destroyed by fire, and the present record book begins in 1829.

The present house of worship was built in 1839. The records state that John Dunlap deeded Lot 7 to the trustees at that date.

The first minister after the church was organized was Rev. Gaines, the second Rev. Thomas,  the third Maynard Ogden. The first ruling Elders were James and John Nickels, half brothers.

“Bachelor Jimmie’” presented the church a parsonage site, several acres of ground, now a part of William Crawford’s farm on which the manse is still standing.

In 1829 Rev. Alexander Craig was pastor of the church, and James Bryson, Alexander McCann and James Baird were Ruling Elders. In 1831 Rev. T. E. Hughes became pastor and Joseph A. Leech, William McGreer and Robert Swann were added to the eldership. In 1836 Rev. John Meeks succeeded Mr. Hughes.

In 1839 Robert Logan and William Nickels were elected to the office of ruling Elder and D. B. Ried, a licentiate, was elected as supply for the vacant pulpit in conjunction with Bath church, and $400 were raised for his support.

In 1840 Rev. John Gilchrist succeeded Rev. Ried as pastor, and had charge of the church for ten years. He was surely a most excellent man, and was ably assisted by his noble wife, who was a daughter of that Rev. Francis Monfort whose four sons, Joseph, Francis, David and Isaac were so eminent in the ministry. Three sons of John Gilchrist and Sophia, his wife, were ministers, Frank, Joseph and Hugh, the two eldest born in Dunlapsville.

During Rev. Gilchrist’s pastorate the parsonage in the village was built.  In 1853 the Whitewater Presbytery located the Whitewater Presbyterial Academy at Dunlapsville and Rev. L. D. Potter, afterward president of Glendale College, was elected principal of the new institution.

Those were stirring times for our village and its church. Until the Academy could be erected, the church must be used for the school. Temporary partitions were put up and three teachers were installed. New people moved into the village and neighborhood, farm houses and town homes took in boarders and everything caught the infection of the new spirit of progress.

Rev. R. B. Abbott, afterwards president of Albert Lea College, Minnesota, became second principal of the Academy, in the new building, and in 1856-1857 was pastor of the church as well. Rev. Gilchrist resigned on account of failing health. I think that these years had been the great years of the church, both in temporal and spiritual things.

I have a vivid remembrance of the building and the people. I remember the high-backed unpainted pews, with the middle wall of partition, the bare floors, the side doors, the corner pews, the platform-- two steps high, with its white railing, the pulpit high up on the wall--its stairs and cushioned book-rest, the long bench in front of it where the officiating ministers sat on communion occasions.

And the people---so many, every seat filled! It was not considered respectable to stay away from church, unless you were an adherent of some other denomination; in that case you were excusable for denominational lines were closely drawn then.

I wonder if anyone here today can tell who sat in the corner pews west of the pulpit and can recall some half-forgotten faces, as I mention the names of Grandmother Bryson, Aunt Betsey Nickels, Mrs. Leech, Mrs. Steel and the Maids Abernathey, Nancy, Betsey, Polly and Nellie. And how many can remember Robert Logan’s fervent prayers in the little prayer service were always had before preaching on communion Sabbaths.

Our Academy had a short life, but the history does not belong here. Rev. McKinney was its third and last  principal.

Rev. Devine at that time was pastor of the church, a very eccentric man, little suited to the place and the work. Daniel Ogden, Sr., Daniel Ogden, Jr. and Thomas G. Ide were elders. Rev. Iddings, of doubtful ecclesiastical standing, succeed Rev. Devine, and he was followed by Rev. Kerr.

Rev. B. F. Mayo was pastor in the early sixties, that trying time for the church and state.  Rev. T. B. Atkins was supply for awhile and in 1870 Rev. P. H. Golladay came to us. He was our last settled pastor.

The conditions in the community were changed. A new generation--less devout, removals, deaths and other causes, had sadly affected the spiritual life of the church. For a time the pulpit was filled by Liberty pastors, Rev. Whallon, Rev. Dillon and others. Then we had Rev. C. B. Duncan, a Lane student for a year. We were grouped at one time with Hagerstown and Rev. Falkinburg was supply. Joseph Gilchrist and S. A. Jamieson with other Lane men, preached for us.

Finally in 1881 Frank Gilchrist, a Lane student came; he was not a talented man, but one filled with the Spirit and he understood men, and had unbounded faith in God. In 1882, under his ministrations, we had our most remarkable revival, when twenty-four were added to the church. Rev. S. S. Potter came to baptize and received into the church these and at that time began his great interest in our church, which continued until he was called home.

Four years later over sixty were added to the church, still under the care of Rev Gilchrist and Rev. Potter. After Mr. Gilchrist went to his work in the Home Mission field of the West, Rev. Wieman

and Rev. Lewis, both Lane men, supplied for a time and die good work. In 1890 we were grouped with Liberty church and Rev. J. S. Revenaugh came. He was with the church eight years, years of blessed memories--thrice blessed since he has been called to his reward.

Of the more recent years, when Dr. Parks and Rev. Huffer were with us, it is not necessary to speak, they were good men and their worked was blessed. You all remember them nor will I speak of the ruling elders of the last thirty years, their names are familiar to you.

The history our church is a record of struggles, discouragement’s and triumphs. Many have gone from it to other fields of service and have been a help to their fellowmen. Many have entered upon their reward.

The future of this organization is under God, in the hand of those who are alive and remain.

We hope for good results to follow the work of our new leaders, but to make theses possible there

must be zeal and devotion in the membership. These must exist if we would keep our place among the living churches of Whitewater Presbytery.
