Goodwin’s Corner located in the northeastern corner of Center Township in Union County for many years had a post office, a store and a church which served the people of that locality. John Pentecost came from Watertown, Pennsylvania in 1809 and squatted on land in Union County on which Goodwin’s Corner is located. The sheepskin patent dated 2 June 1814, signed by President Madison describing the land as reaching east to the Ohio River is held by the great grandson, Henry M. Pentecost, who owns the farm. John Pentecost had twelve children. A son, James Doles Pentecost married Eliza Goodwin. Her parents, Bonapart Levi and wife Eunice came from near Ruthland, Vermond and settled at this place since known as Goodwin’s Corner. Bonepart Levi Goodwin was a country doctor and store keeper. His daughter Eliza Goodwin Pentecost was in great demand as a home doctor and nurse never refused the call of suffering. A ledger beginning in 1840, leather bound and neatly kept, gives the store of life at that time. All accounts have frequent items of tobacco, whiskey, nails, medicine, coloring dyes and dress goods. The payments are either home produce or labor with occasional cash.
